How does a doula differ from a midwife?
A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical and informational support to a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. A midwife on the other hand, is a healthcare professional who is trained to provide hands on medical care to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. While both professions support women during childbirth, their roles and responsibilities differ.
When should I hire a Doula?
A doula should ideally be hired during the second trimester of pregnancy, as this allows for ample time to build a relationship and establish a birth or postpartum plan. However, it's never too late to hire a doula, and they can still provide valuable support during labor, delivery and postpartum even if they are brought on later in the pregnancy.
What should I look for in a doula?
When interviewing a doula, it's important to look for someone who is a good listener, empathetic, and has experience supporting women during childbirth. It's important to choose a doula who aligns with your values and preferences. Trust your instincts and choose someone who you feel comfortable with and confident in.
Do you offer a payment plan?

What does the research show?
According to a 2017 Cochrane Review, overall, birthing women who received continuous support were more likely to have spontaneous vaginal births and less likely to have any pain medication, epidurals, negative feelings about childbirth, vacuum or forceps-assisted births, and Cesareans
The researchers found that overall, continuous support from a doula during birth leads to a:
-
39% decrease in the risk of Cesarean
-
15% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth
-
10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
-
Shorter labors by 41 minutes on average
-
38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five-minute Apgar score
-
31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience
